Computer Applications
So Which Applications?
Computer Applications is more project based than test based. We build a strong foundation in spreadsheets for laying out information effectively, work with text formatting programs and learn how to manipulate graphics and integrate the products of different software types into a clean, organized, cohesive format for printed or projected use. Applications covered include Microsoft Office programs like Word, Excel and Powerpoint; Adobe CS6 programs like Photoshop, Indesign, and Flash, and Google programs like Sketchup8, Internet Searching with Google Chrome, and Google Docs. In addition we look at free programs and on line programs that students always have access to as long as they can get to the web. Built 9-12-14 in Computer Apps.

Work in Class
Excel is the foundation for many businesses. We create a workbook of pages that together form the basis of a security company. Students develop a name, a logo, and a motto for these local companies. The student workbook currently contains a stock portfolio, Inventory, advertising options, vehicle purchase worksheet, estimating sheet, job proposals, employee records, and a balance sheet. We also create an advertising brochure for the company using Word or Publisher. |
Graphics are also covered.
The class includes basic photoshop skills: Cutting out images, colorizing images, adjusting the exposure of the image, cloning portions of images, compositing and adding text are a few of the basics. We learn how to do this not only in Photo Shop, but also in the free programs students can download so they always have access to editing capability. One of the 2013 class projects was to update the school map at PHS. |
