Architectural Plan Requirements
Title Page or Main Floor Page
In your case the Title Page will be an eigth scale (1/8" = 1') drawing of the floor plan. It will show exterior walls (6 inches thick), windows (with window sizes noted), doors, room labels, room dimensions, door sizes and swings, and exterior dimensions. If there is a garage, carport, or deck on the main floor, those will be noted as well. For example CLICK HERE. |
Second Floor Pages and Basement Pages
These all include the same information as the main floor page. |
Elevation Pages come next.
These pages are drawn to scale and show the East, West, North, and South views. Normally two will fit on a single page. These show the overall height of the building, the length of the building, window sizes and roof pitches. For an example CLICK HERE or CLICK HERE |
After the Elevation Pages you want to create the Typical X-Section Page.
This page is a slice through the building. It shows foundation, floor joists, room height, stairs and cuts through cabinets. You want to choose a complicated part of the house to slice to reveal key information for whoever is constructing the house. For an example CLICK HERE. |
Foundation Plans are important to the concrete sub.
These plans include Footings (16" wide for two story and 12" for single story) Foundation walls (8" two story) and 6" single story) Major bearing point footings. Rebar schedule and foundation vents. For an example CLICK HERE |
Floor Framing Plans show where all of the floor joists go. Your floor framing members are normally 16 inches on center or 24 inches on center. The diagrams tend to be simple and include the outline of the foundation and footings under. Also, you need to show any bearing beams. You don't want your floor to collapse when someone puts a waterbed on it.

Roof Framing Diagrams (optional)
These plans show how the trusses or rafters fit onto the building. Normally Floor joists, wall studs and roof trusses or rafters stack directly on top of each other when spacing is 24" and are somewhat aligned when 16". Headers and beams supporting spans greater than four feet are shown on these drawings. For an example CLICK HERE |
