Photographic History of Local landmarks
Our class will search for historic photos of local landmarks. They can be in or around Gig Harbor or Key Peninsula. They should be within the school service area. Our task will be to find photos and take current photos of the same place. Then we will build a photographic history of the change. This could be a series of old photos with a current photo or the project might be a large color photo of the area with old, black and white images set inside the larger image. We will print these out and create a school display at the district office in January.

Landmark Ideas: landmarks might include church buildings, commercial buildings, bridges, schools, roads, any change man has made to the original environment that was here.
You might start looking at the Harbor History Museum website for Gig Harbor. They have a gallery and a blog with many different buildings. Since you want to be able to locate the spot pick something identifiable or something with an address. The first garage, grocery store, bank, library, school....all are possibilities. You can also do a search with appropriate words like "Gig Harbor Historic Photos". Become a detective. Find a landmark that appeals to you. For example tracing the history of Henderson Bay High School and its various locations would be a great project. When you arrive at a topic, register the landmark with your teacher so we don't have duplicates. If it is a major project like tracing all the old school locations you might have a partner. |
You will need to get permission and credit someone for the photo you access. For example, the founding families of Gig Harbor have immense photo galleries and information about their early business ventures. If you can contact a real person they will be complimented by what you are doing. You will want to ask them to use their photo for the display and in return you will give them a photo credit.
People will not only be fascinated by your project, but will want to know something about the details and history of the photo and its subject. So you will prepare a brief history that fully explains the story behind the historic photo and that typed out history will become a part of your display. Remember: Who, What, Where, When and Why. |
