Photo Texture

Terms to know: Depth of Field, Focus, Aperture, Shutter Speed.

In this assignment you may have a center of interest or you could simple have an interesting texture. The best photos are sometimes vague as to what the actual item is, therefore the subject matter could be unidentifiable. What is not an option is the clarity, crispness and detail your photos need to exhibit. Texture photos are sometimes used as backgrounds. Often their content is interpretive. Many times the actual content is not immediately discernible....that is part of the fun.

Texture photography is any imagery that depends, at least partly, for its impact on the texture of the objects in the image. Texture will be defined as the surface detail of an object.

Notice the importance of depth of field in these photos.

Light is very important on these photos. If they are background textures, often they are shot at 90 degrees but not always. Focus is also key. Your goal is to get sharp, interesting photos where the texture is the key organizing element of the photograph. Shoot at least 12 photos. Make a contact sheet of all photos and put your three best into gallery. This is due Friday, Oct 10.
Composing Texture Photographs

Contrast, curves and patterns are aspects of texture photographs which can help compose an image. Contrast, whether tonal or color, makes the texture detail show up even more. Curves help convey a sense of movement with leading curves directing the attention towards the focal point. Non-leading curves have no specific direction but still give information about the image. Patterns can help catch the viewer’s attention. Combining multiple patterns can support each other. Another method is by breaking the pattern for an interesting effect.
